The Scottish Terrier is no exception. The robust dog is mentioned as early as the 18th century, but at that time it was far from meeting today's standards for the breed. It is assumed that his ancestors come from the Highlands and the county of Perthshire. Like so many dogs, the "Scottie" was bred for hunting, for which the breed needed a correspondingly strong bite, long legs and lots of muscle. If you meet a Scottie today, he will have much shorter legs than in those days. The current standard of the breed originated around 1850 in the Aberdeen area. So the first name "Aberdeen Terrier" is no coincidence. Since 1879, terriers have been shown at exhibitions, which led to rapid popularity even beyond the country's borders. In the first decades of the 20th century, the breed thus quickly became a fashionable dog. Their popularity even took them as far as the White House. Presidents like Roosevelt or George W. Bush were proud owners of the black, Scottish four-legged friends. The elongated head is an absolute feature of this breed and is sure to catch your eye immediately, if only because of its large, pointed ears. The dog also has a pronounced beard. Its tail stands erect over the body with its soft and short undercoat. The top coat is rather wiry and harsh. Thus, the Scottish Terrier has a water-repellent coat that protects it well in the Scottish weather. Regular trimming is necessary for the Scottie's breed appearance, but also so that the coat can retain its weatherproofing. There is little that is harsh about a Scottish Terrier. For the most part, Scotties are black, but sometimes the companion dogs come in a wheaten or brindle variety. When you trim your Scottish terrier, the fur on the top of the torso is usually clipped short. In most cases, however, this does not indicate serious liver disease. The dogs nevertheless reach a normal age. Bladder cancer, however, is up to ten times more common in this breed than in other breeds. This is mainly attributed to genetic causes. Research is underway to isolate the relevant gene. Kittens rarely struggle with cranio-mandibular osteopathy, a distinctly painful disease of the cranial bones. dir="ltr">The origin of the Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier is an ancient Scottish dog breed. As far back as about 400 years ago, these small dogs existed on the Hebridean island of Skye. Presumably, they originally descended from dogs that came to the Scottish islands with Spanish sailors. But Scotch Terriers and Cairn Terriers probably also played a role in their development. They were used for hunting, and would flush out foxes, badgers and otters in their den. Because they were so particularly pretty and cute animals, they were bred gradually purposefully and inspired also the members of the English nobility. Already Mary Stuart had Skyes and later also Queen Victoria kept them in Windsor Castle. Gradually they came into fashion in other parts of Europe. In 1879 the breed was officially recognized. Today Skyes are hardly used for hunting and are rather family dogs or show dogs.

","skye-terrier",11,"Skye terrier",13,14,4098,26,24,"Skye Terrier breed description, black dog breed, cream dog breed, dog similar to Elo in small, small dog, one man dog, dog for beginners, family dog, Scottish dog breed, breed from Scotland with funny ears, dog with bat ears and fur on ears","
The nature of the Skye Terrier

This little dog is a true terrier, which means he is clever, courageous and stubborn. In addition, there is the unbroken hunting instinct of this breed. So he is really not a lap dog, rather a little rascal. Nevertheless, he is very lovable, very teachable and willing to learn. However, he needs clear announcements, consequence and a certain affectionate severity. But this sensitive dog does not tolerate harshness, then he is disturbed and does not obey at all. Loving persuasion works much better on him, as it does on all terriers. A well trained dog of this breed gets along very well with children, with other pets and is a great family dog. Nevertheless, many Skyes are so-called "one-man dogs" who only really accept one member of the family as pack leader and see the others as mere pack members, although they get along well with them too. Even though the Skye doesn't look particularly athletic at first glance, he loves long walks, search games, ball games, and loves to bathe and swim.

","
The breed characteristics of the Skye Terrier

He belongs to the small dogs and low-running terriers with short legs and an elongated back. Its body is more than twice as long as it is high. From head to tail tip, an adult Skye measures up to 1 meter. Another prominent breed characteristic is the long coat, which reaches almost to the ground, and the dense undercoat. This made the animals perfectly adapted to the Scottish climate and at the same time protected them from the bites of their prey. The ears are mostly pointed, but sometimes hanging and covered with long fringes.

The coat of the Skye

The colours of the purebred Skye are black, grey, cream and fawn.
