India, a country with a diverse culture and a long history, also has an impressive variety of native dog breeds that reflect the geographic and cultural diversity of the subcontinent.
Native Dog Breeds:
- Rajapalayam: Also known as the Poligar dog, this bold hunting dog hails from the southern state of Tamil Nadu. It is known for its elegant white coat and watchful eyes.
Kanni: This slender and athletic dog resembles a greyhound and also hails from Tamil Nadu. He is often used in deer hunts and is known for his speed.
Chippiparai: Another greyhound from southern India, the Chippiparai is known for its endurance and independent temperament. It is traditionally used to hunt game.
Bakharwal Dog: This herding dog from the Jammu and Kashmir region is traditionally used by the nomads of the Gujjar community to protect flocks of sheep and goats.
Indian Pariah Dog: This is one of the oldest known dog breeds of the subcontinent. As an all-purpose dog, it is well suited for various tasks and is known for its intelligence and adaptability.
Modern Trends:
Although Indian breeds are still highly prized in certain regions, international breeds have become popular in urban areas of India. Nevertheless, there are efforts to raise awareness of indigenous breeds and emphasize their importance in Indian culture.
