Thai dog breeds: Exotic Companions from the Land of Smiles
Thailand, often referred to as the "Land of Smiles," is known worldwide for its rich culture, delicious cuisine and picturesque beaches. But in addition to these well-known charms, Thailand also has some fascinating dog breeds that are lesser known outside the country, but just as captivating.
1. Thai Ridgeback
The Thai Ridgeback is one of the most famous dog breeds in Thailand. This medium-sized dog is distinguished by the namesake "ridge" or crest on its back, which runs counter to the direction of growth of the rest of its coat. Originally bred on Phu Quoc Island, it is known for its ability to hunt and work on rough terrain. His short, shiny coat and loyal, independent traits make him a popular companion for families worldwide.
2. Thai Bangkaew
The Thai Bangkaew is another proud representative of the Thai dog breeds. Originally from Bangkaew village, this medium-sized, fluffy dog is known for its beautiful, thick coat and lively temperament. He is brave, intelligent and very loyal to his family.
3. Isan Dog
A lesser known but equally interesting dog is the Isan Dog, named after the Isan region in northeastern Thailand. These dogs are hardy, adaptable, and often have a mix of traits, having lived and worked in the harsh environment of the region for generations.
Dogs in Thai culture
Dogs play a special role in Thai culture. They are often considered family members and receive special appreciation and care. It is also not uncommon for Buddhist temples (wat) to house and care for stray dogs, reflecting their spiritual and social importance in Thai society.
