Alaskan Shepherd

Alaskan Shepherd:Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd Mix

Hybrid Breed

Alaskan Malamute + German Shepherd

Dogs/Active

Origin and development of the Alaskan Shepherd

The Alaskan Shepherd is a so-called designer dog that is the result of a deliberate cross between a German Shepherd and an Alaskan Malamute. The idea behind this hybrid breed was to combine the German Shepherd's willingness to work, intelligence and manageability with the stamina, strength and robustness of the Alaskan Malamute. The result is a powerful, adaptive dog breed that is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in North America - especially among people looking for an active and versatile dog.

A uniform breed standard does not yet exist, as the Alaskan Shepherd is not recognized by major canine associations such as the FCI or AKC. Accordingly, appearance, temperament and health vary from dog to dog. Targeted breeding probably began in the 1980s or 1990s in the USA - similar to other hybrid breeds, the aim here was to combine certain characteristics and compensate for possible genetic weaknesses by increasing diversity.

Name synonyms and alternative names

In addition to "Alaskan Shepherd", the terms "Malamute Shepherd Mix", "Alaskan German Shepherd " or unofficially simply "Malshep" can also be found. As this is a hybrid breed, the names are not protected and there are sometimes regional differences in naming.

In German-speaking countries, the term "Alaskan Shepherd" is now commonly used, although the dog itself is (still) rarely found.

Criticism of hybrid breeding

As with many designer dogs, the breeding of the Alaskan Shepherd is also subject to criticism. Opponents argue that the uncontrolled or unprofessional mating of two very different working breeds can cause problems - for example in terms of temperament, husbandry requirements or genetic risks. Both parent breeds are demanding, intelligent and willing to work - if these characteristics are multiplied in an unconsidered manner, the result is dogs that quickly develop behavioral problems or are underchallenged in unsuitable hands.

In addition, many Alaskan Shepherds come from hobby breedings where neither health checks nor temperament tests are consistently carried out on the parents. This can lead to hereditary diseases, excessive demands or unstable character traits being passed on. Reputable breeders are rare and prospective buyers should therefore look very carefully.

Possible character traits of the Alaskan Shepherd

The Alaskan Shepherd typically combines the intelligence and work ethic of the German Shepherd with the physical stamina and independence of the Alaskan Malamute. Many of these dogs are:

  • Eager to learn and attentive,

  • loyal and people-oriented,

  • but at the same time stubborn and independent.

Particularly noteworthy is the high urge to move - these dogs need physical AND mental exercise, otherwise they tend to undesirable behavior such as digging, howling or destroying. Their suitability as a family dog depends heavily on their socialization: With clear leadership, training and activity, they can be great companions - but they are not beginner dogs.

They often show vigilance or even reserve towards strangers, which makes them reliable guard dogs if trained appropriately. Sensitive handling is important - too much pressure or inconsistent rules quickly lead to a loss of trust in this hybrid breed.

Possible diseases and care requirements

As both parent breeds are prone to certain hereditary diseases, Alaskan Shepherds can also carry health risks. These include, among others:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia (HD/ED)

  • Degenerative myelopathy (DM)

  • Eye diseases (e.g. progressive retinal atrophy)

  • Digestive problems and allergies

The grooming requirements are high due to the dense, double coat - Alaskan Shepherds lose large amounts of undercoat, especially during the shedding season (spring and fall). Regular brushing (at least 2-3 times a week) is necessary to prevent matting and keep the coat healthy.

In addition, attention should be paid to exercise that is easy on the joints, a high-quality diet and regular health checks. Preventive measures should be discussed with a vet at an early stage, especially if the dog is used for sport (e.g. pulling).

Visually, Alaskan Shepherds are impressive dogs: large, powerful, with a strong, muscular build and usually an expressive head with an alert gaze. The shoulder height is usually between 60 and 70 cm, the weight varies between 30 and 45 kg depending on the type - bitches are often somewhat smaller and lighter.

The coat is medium to long, dense and weatherproof. Typical colors are:

  • Black-grey (wolf-grey)

  • Black with tan markings

  • Creamy white, silver-grey, or also reddish

  • Rarer: Sable, agouti or pied

The eyes are usually almond-shaped, brown or amber, more rarely blue (especially with Malamute markings). The ears can be erect or semi-drooping, depending on the type. The tail is usually bushy and carried in a slightly sickle shape.

Overall, the Alaskan Shepherd looks like a powerful mixture of sled dog and sheepdog - impressive, full of energy and noble at the same time.

  • A German Shepherd-Malamute mix is a cross between a German Shepherd and a Malamute. These crossbreeds are often bred for their loyalty, obedience and intelligence.

  • Alaskan Shepherds can take on many different appearances, as they can inherit characteristics from both parents. However, most Shepherd-Malamute mixes have a strong, muscular build and a dense coat. They may also have the pointed ears and bushy tail of a German Shepherd or the dense coat and compact body of a Malamute.

  • German Shepherd Malamute mixes can vary greatly in size depending on which parent breed they more closely resemble. In general, these dogs are medium to large in size, with some dogs weighing up to 50 and 80 kg.

  • German Shepherd Malamute mixes need a lot of exercise as they were bred as working and herding dogs. A daily walk or run will help keep your dog healthy and fit. These dogs also need access to a large yard or playground where they can run and play. German Shepherd Malamute mixes are also well suited for obedience training and socialization classes.

  • German Shepherd Malamute mixes make excellent family dogs as they are generally very loyal and protective of their caregivers. However, it is important that you introduce your German Shepherd Malamute mix to children at an early age and supervise all interactions between them. With proper socialization and training, these dogs can learn to get along with children of all ages.
