Facts & Origin
Origin and history of the Toy Fox Terrier
The Toy Fox Terrier is a small but extremely lively dog breed that was originally developed in the USA. It was deliberately bred smaller from the Smooth Fox Terrier, including crossbreeding with the Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound and Miniature Pinscher, to create a compact, intelligent and versatile companion dog. The breed is officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is listed there under Toy Breeds.
Name synonyms and usage
The Toy Fox Terrier is also sometimes referred to as the American Toy Terrier, although this is less common. The name Toy Fox Terrier has established itself internationally, as it clearly identifies both the origin and the original breeding line from the Fox Terrier. The breed is less common in Europe, but is becoming increasingly popular with lovers of small, alert dogs.

Suitability and character
The Toy Fox Terrier is lively, courageous, intelligent and affectionate. Despite its small size, it has the typical terrier characteristics: He is attentive, sometimes stubborn and loves to be given tasks. He is particularly suitable for active individuals, seniors or childless couples who are willing to spend a lot of time with him. He is also ideal for dog sports such as agility or trick training. It can be integrated well into families with older, considerate children, but it is rather unsuitable for households with very small children.
He needs clear rules and mental exercise, loves to play and exercise, but is also cuddly and seeks closeness to his caregivers. Due to his size and sensitivity, he is also well suited to living in an apartment - provided he is kept busy enough.

Typical diseases
Although the Toy Fox Terrier is generally considered to be robust and long-lived - many representatives reach an age of 13 to 15 years - there are some health risks typical of the breed. These include patellar luxation (a common patellar dislocation in small dogs), dental problems due to their small jaws and, in some lines, a certain susceptibility to allergies or skin sensitivities. Legg-Calvé-Perthes, a disease of the femoral head, can also occasionally occur. It is therefore important to breed them properly with preventive health care, a balanced diet and regular veterinary check-ups in order to maintain the quality of life of this active little dog for as long as possible.

Appearance
The Toy Fox Terrier is a small, petite dog that nevertheless has an athletic appearance. It usually weighs between 1.5 and 3.5 kilograms and reaches a shoulder height of around 20 to 29 centimetres. Its short, smooth coat lies close to the body and is easy to care for. Typical is a tricolored pattern - mostly white with black and tan, more rarely white with chocolate brown or tan. The upright ears, expressive eyes and square stature give it an alert, elegant appearance. Despite its petite size, the body appears proportioned and muscular, reflecting its original use as a hunter of small prey.
