Hybrid Breed

Chihuahua + Dachshund

Chiweenie's Story

The Chiweenie or Weenihuahua or Choxie is a mixed breed dog, a cross between Chihuahua and Dachshund. As Chiweenie puppies are compact, energetic and loyal animals, you could say they have inherited the best character traits from both of their parents. These cute dogs are also known under the names of Choxie, Weenihuahua and German Taco. Despite their status as designer dogs, you don't have to buy a Chiweenie, they can also be found in animal shelters. Chiweenie breeding began in North America in the 1990s, primarily to reduce back problems that often affect Dachshunds. Later the demand for these sweet companions increased.

Who are they suitable for?

The fur of these adorable puppies is usually short, which also makes them suitable for people suffering from allergies, but there are also long-haired specimens. They are not suitable for extreme weather conditions and they probably need a coat in winter. Caring for them is not a lot of work, the main concern is probably dental care. They are particularly suitable for owners who are willing to invest a lot of time in limiting their barking habits as much as possible, they also tend to fixate on one family member in particular and require a lot of attention.

Attitude, character of the Chiweenie

Chiweenie puppies are suitable as apartment dogs, for single-family households and smaller families, but you should keep in mind that they tend to be yappy from time to time - of course only to warn their owner of potential threats. Their lapdog stature is deceptive, they are playful and full of energy. Stubbornness is one of the characteristics of Chiweenie breeding, which can make it difficult to get them house trained.

Health - which aspects should you keep in mind?

The Weenihuahuas have inherited some health problems from their parents. Because of their Chihuahua parents and their small stomachs, they often suffer from hypoglycaemia, and diabetes is not uncommon. They have inherited intervertebral disc diseases from the Dachshunds, which is why stress on the back and spine should be avoided. As with many small dog breeds, dental problems can often arise, so pay attention to good oral hygiene. Those with floppy ears tend to get infections more often, those who are more like Chihuahuas suffer from knee problems. Chiweenies tend to hold excess weight, but it should be enough to walk your dog half an hour to an hour a day and incorporate some play sessions. As for feeding, don't give them too many treats and pay attention to an age-appropriate diet - which of course varies from the Chiweenie puppy age to the seniority.

Buying a Chiweenie

When buying a Chiweenie you should expect to spend between 600 and 800 euros. It is important to find a trustworthy breeder who can provide you with vaccination protocols of the dog's parents and other certificates.

Chiweenie, Chihuahua mix dog

Usually they resemble Dachshunds more, since they are similar in size, have elongated bodies and mostly floppy ears. The puppies weigh between 2 and 5.5 kilograms on average and reach a height of about 15 to 25 centimeters. Despite their compact size, they can be described as courageous, their hunting instinct is no longer as pronounced as that of Father Dachshund, but their hunting instinct has not entirely disappeared. Their coat colour can be brown, black or white or a colorful mix of all of these. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
