What is Milpro?
Milpro is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic specially developed for dogs. It is available in tablet form and is used to treat and prevent various worm infections. Milpro is effective against roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and lungworms and is also used for heartworm prophylaxis. In this section you will find out how Milpro is used, what special instructions should be followed and what side effects may occur.
Areas of application and mode of action
Milpro offers protection against a wide range of internal and external parasites (endo- and ectoparasites) and is particularly effective against mixed infections. It is used to treat the following parasites in dogs:
- Gastrointestinal nematodes such as hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis)
- Lungworms such as Crenosoma vulpis and Angiostrongylus vasorum
- Tapeworms (incl. Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp.)
- Heartworms for the prophylaxis of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis)
- Eye worms (Thelazia callipaeda)
The product is not suitable for puppies under 2 weeks of age and Milpro should not be used in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredients.
Warnings and special recommendations
Special care should be taken in dogs with the MDR1 mutation (especially herding breeds such as Collies) as the therapeutic range is smaller and side effects such as neurological symptoms may occur more frequently. Dogs with a large number of microfilariae (young heartworms) can react to Milpro with hypersensitivity reactions such as increased salivation or breathing problems.
Tip: All animals in the household should be treated at the same time to prevent re-infection.
Side effects and tolerance
Side effects occur very rarely after administration of Milpro. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors or loss of appetite have been observed in individual cases. Mild hypersensitivity reactions may occur, particularly in dogs with a heavy worm infestation. If unusual symptoms occur after use, the vet should be consulted.
Active ingredient milbemycin oxime & praziquantel
Milbemycin oxime belongs to the macrocyclic lactones and acts by influencing the neurotransmission of parasites. It increases the permeability of the cell membrane for chloride ions, which causes hyperpolarization of the neuromuscular membrane and paralyzes the parasite until it dies.
Praziquantel is effective against all developmental stages of tapeworms and trematodes. It increases the calcium permeability of the parasite membrane, which leads to muscle contraction and ultimately to the death of the parasite. Due to the damage to the membrane, the parasite is either excreted through the intestine or dies directly in the host.

Tips for using Milpro for dogs
Milpro is an antiparasitic in tablet form that is administered orally. The tablets are flavored and are usually voluntarily ingested by dogs, making them easy to administer. The minimum recommended dosage is 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg praziquantel per kilogram of body weight. It is recommended to administer the tablet with food or directly after feeding to improve tolerability.
Dosage according to weight
The dosage depends on the dog's body weight and is given as follows
| Body weight | Milpro Dog S | Milpro Dog M |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 - 1 kg | ½ tablet | - |
| > 1 - 5 kg | 1 tablet | - |
| > 5 - 10 kg | 2 tablets | 1 tablet |
| > 10 - 15 kg | 3 tablets | 1 tablet |
| > 15 - 20 kg | 4 tablets | 1 tablet |
| > 20 - 25 kg | 5 tablets | 1 tablet |
| > 25 - 50 kg | - | 2 tablets |
| > 50 - 75 kg | - | 3 tablets |
For dogs older than 6 months, regular worming is recommended about four times a year. In the case of heartworm or Echinococcus infestations, treatment should be carried out monthly to ensure complete control.
Please note that it is always advisable to consult a vet before administering any medication.
Treatment of puppies and pregnant bitches
For puppies, Milpro is recommended from 2 weeks of age and monthly thereafter up to 6 months of age. Lactating bitches are treated approximately 2 weeks after the birth of the puppies. After 6 months of age, worming is carried out regularly four times a year or as recommended by the vet.
Prophylaxis of heartworm disease
Heartworm prophylaxis begins one month after the first contact with mosquitoes and ends within one month of the end of the mosquito season. The tablet should be administered on the same day every month. If treatment has been interrupted for more than 6 weeks, prophylaxis should be resumed immediately and a vet consulted.
Treatment of lung and eye worms
For the treatment of Angiostrongylus infestations, Milpro is administered four times a week. For the treatment and control of eye worms (Thelazia callipaeda), Milpro is administered once. If there is still an infestation after the first application, the treatment is repeated after one week.
Use in breeding dogs and pregnant bitches
Milpro can be safely administered to breeding dogs and pregnant and lactating bitch es, which sets it apart from other worming products.
Storage and safety
Because the tablets are flavored, dogs can seek them out and ingest them excessively. It is important to store Milpro for dogs out of reach of animals. In the event of accidental ingestion by humans, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Conclusion on the use of Milpro
Milpro offers comprehensive protection against various types of worms and is suitable for both treatment and prevention. Thanks to its different dosage options, it is suitable for dogs of all weights. Regular administration helps to effectively control worm infestations and protect your dog's health.
