We'll introduce you to each breed in words and pictures so you can get a complete look at their unique traits, personalities and backgrounds.

We'll start our journey in the windy plains of Castile, where the fast and graceful Galgos Español, Spanish Greyhounds, reign supreme. Then we travel to the rugged and mountainous landscape of the Pyrenees to meet the powerful Mastiffs that have guarded the region's livestock for centuries. We also visit the gentle and lovable water dogs that are native to the country's coasts and wetlands.

But that's just the beginning. There is so much more to discover.

1. Spanish Greyhound (Galgo Español)

The Galgo Español is a slender, elegant dog that resembles the English Greyhound in many ways. This breed was originally bred to hunt hares and other small game in Spain and is known for its speed and endurance. Galgos are gentle, sensitive dogs that fit in well with families, although they can be somewhat reserved with strangers. Indoors, they are surprisingly calm and can sleep for hours in a comfortable spot. However, they need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy, and they love to romp in a safe, fenced-in area. Their short coats are low maintenance, and they are usually healthy dogs.

2. Spanish Mastiff (Mastín Español).

The Spanish Mastiff is a large and powerful breed that was originally bred to protect livestock herds against predators. These dogs are calm and good-natured, but can also be very alert and brave when it counts. Despite their size, they are remarkably gentle and good with children and other pets. Their grooming needs are moderate, but they tend to drool a lot. They need regular exercise to stay healthy, but are less active than many other breeds. Because they are a large breed, they have a shorter life expectancy and are more prone to health problems that affect large dogs.

3. Pyrenean Mastiff (Mastín del Pirineo)

The Pyrenean Mastiff is another large and powerful breed that was originally bred as a guard dog for livestock against predators such as wolves and bears. These dogs are friendly and good-natured, but tend to be reserved towards strangers. They are incredibly loyal and have a strong protective instinct towards their family and home. Their grooming needs are moderate, and they require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Like the Spanish Mastiff, they tend to drool a lot and are prone to health problems that affect large dog breeds.

The Spanish Water Dog is a versatile and active breed that has been used for a variety of tasks including herding, hunting and water work. They are intelligent and easy to train, making them excellent companion dogs and family pets. However, their energy and resourcefulness can make them a challenge for inexperienced dog owners. They have a characteristic curly coat that needs regular grooming to prevent matting. They love to swim and need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy.
