The American Foxhound has its origins in several breeds of dogs. It was created by crossing French running and hunting dogs, German sweat dogs, and English Foxhounds. Also the genes of the dog breed Harrier flow in the blood of the American Foxhound. The American Foxhound was mainly used for hunting, often in large packs of dogs. Depending on the type of hunting, different types of the American Foxhound were selectively bred. The types "July", "Trigg" and "Goodmann" are distinguished. The nature of the American Foxhound
The American Foxhound is in its physique, as well as in its nature, very much from its selective breeding and its original use for hunting. He has a rather idiosyncratic disposition, for by running long distances these dogs keep in touch with their caregiver while hunting, but rush and run their independent way. Influenced by his history, the American Foxhound feels most comfortable living or working in a pack. At the very least, your American companion should have a few canine friends to keep him happy.

Breeding and buying an American Foxhound
If you would like to buy an American Foxhound, you should look for a serious and registered breeder. The American Foxhound is represented by breeding clubs in the VDH, as well as in the AKC and by the FCI. Apart from a breeder you should consider the possibility to get an American Foxhound from a shelter. Due to the high urge to move, many people are often overwhelmed with this breed.
Description and characteristics of the American Foxhound
Very characteristic of the American Foxhound's build is a muscular and sinewy stature. It is desired in the standard that the chest girth be very large, in proportion to the height at the withers. Since the American Foxhound is a running dog, he needs a lot of space for his lungs, which is why the chest is very deep. The coat is harsh in texture and kept short so that it does not interfere with hunting. The overall appearance and physique of this breed are designed to run long distances. The American Foxhound is often confused with the Beagle or its close relative, the English Foxhound. However, the Hound, which originated in the United States, is more upright and delicately built.
