This breed belongs to the running dog category and therefore has a lean and athletic build. Males grow between 56 and 64 cm tall, while bitches reach a height at withers between 53 and 61 cm. American Foxhounds belong to the group of medium-sized dogs and weigh between 30 and 34 kg. This breed is also the State Dog of the State of Virginia. The American Foxhound can live up to 13 years.

The American Foxhound has its origins in several breeds of dogs. It was created by crossing French running and hunting dogs, German sweat dogs, and English Foxhounds.
