The Pomapoo - a Pomeranian x Poodle mix

The Pomapoo is a so-called designer dog that is the result of a deliberate cross between a Miniature Spitz (Pomeranian) and a Poodle - often a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The aim of this hybrid breed is to combine the positive characteristics of both breeds: the lively, friendly nature of the Miniature Spitz and the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle.

As with many designer dogs, the history of the Pomapoo is not exactly documented. Presumably, this crossbreed originated in the USA in recent decades, when interest in hybrid breeds combining certain character traits and external features increased.

Criticism of designer dogs

Despite the popularity of such crossbreeds, there is also criticism of the breeding of designer dogs such as the Pomapoo. As it is not an officially recognized breed, there is a lack of standardized breeding lines and uniform characteristics. This can lead to variability in the appearance, behavior and health of the dogs. Another criticism is that the popularity of designer dogs increases demand, which in turn can attract dubious breeders who place less value on the health and well-being of the animals.

Who is this dog suitable for?

In terms of suitability, the Pomapoo is a popular companion dog due to its mostly friendly, adaptable and intelligent nature. It is well suited to families, couples or individuals, in both urban and rural environments. Its compact size makes it particularly attractive for apartment living. However, despite its small size, the Pomapoo needs sufficient mental and physical activity to be balanced and happy.

Possible character traits

The Pomapoo, a mix of Pomeranian and Poodle, often combines the best characteristics of both breeds. Typically, Pomapoos are intelligent, affectionate and friendly towards strangers, children and other animals. They tend to form a close bond with their owners and enjoy being the center of attention. Their playfulness and desire to please make them pleasant companions.

The Pomapoo in everyday life

Despite their small size, Pomapoos have moderate energy levels and benefit from regular physical and mental exercise. Daily walks, interactive games and learning new tricks help to challenge them both physically and mentally. However, they are adaptable and also enjoy relaxed cuddles on the sofa, making them ideal companions for different lifestyles.

What diseases can occur?

The Pomapoo, a cross between the Pomeranian (Miniature Spitz) and the Poodle, is generally a robust and healthy dog. Nevertheless, certain hereditary diseases can occur, which can be inherited from the parents. The most common health problems include

  • Patellar luxation: a condition in which the kneecap slides out of its normal position. This can lead to pain and restricted movement and often occurs in small dog breeds.

  • Tracheal collapse: This is a weakening of the windpipe that can cause breathing difficulties. Affected dogs often exhibit coughing, especially when excited or exerting themselves.

  • Epilepsy: A neurological disorder that leads to recurrent seizures. The exact cause is often unclear, and treatment requires close cooperation with the veterinarian.

  • Dental problems: Due to the jaw structure of small dogs, Pomapoos are prone to tartar buildup and gum disease. Regular dental care and check-ups are therefore essential.

  • Eye diseases: These include cataracts (cataracts) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can lead to blindness if left untreated.

  • Skin diseases: Some Pomapoos can be prone to skin problems, especially if they inherit the dense coat of the Miniature Spitz. Regular grooming and skin checks are important to detect irritations early.

To minimize the risk of these conditions, it is important to choose a responsible breeder who performs health tests on the parent animals. Regular veterinary examinations, a balanced diet and appropriate exercise also help to keep Pomapoos healthy.

Externally, the Pomapoo combines the characteristics of the Miniature Spitz (Pomeranian) and the Poodle, which means that its appearance can vary greatly - even within the same litter. Its build is usually compact and light, and it generally reaches a shoulder height of 20 to 30 cm and weighs between 2 and 6 kilograms.

Its coat is one of the most striking features: It can be smooth, wavy or curly - depending on which parent is more predominant. The coat texture ranges from soft and fluffy to dense and typically curly. The colors vary greatly and range from black, brown, white, cream and grey to multi-colored varieties.

The large, dark saucer eyes are also typical, giving the Pomapoo a friendly and watchful face. The ears can be carried upright like the Miniature Spitz or drooping like the Poodle - or a mixture of both. The tail is often bushy and is carried happily over the back.

Overall, the Pomapoo is an expressive, cute little companion whose appearance can vary greatly - but that is precisely what makes it so charming for many.

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a slowly progressive death of the retina in dogs.

  • Patellar problems

Problems with the Patellar can be a displacement or weak kneecap, which is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs, also because of overweight.

  • Eye diseases

Often occur with allergies and intolerances.

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

Hip dysplasia (HD) is a genetic condition in dogs where the hip joint is not shaped properly. This leads to pain, stiffness and restricted movement.

  • Elbow dysplasia (ED)

Elbow joint dysplasia is a chronic disease complex of the elbow joint of fast growing dog breeds.

  • Numbness

    Often occurs in old age.

  • Heart disease

Can occur frequently in dogs and can sometimes be treated with medication.

  • Eye infections

Chronic eye infections can be very painful in dogs and can be treated with medication. In rare cases, the cornea must be treated.

  • Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation is the term used to describe a displacement of the kneecap, which is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs.

  • A Pomeranian-Poodle mix is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Poodle. These dogs are usually small and have a coat that is a mixture of the Pomeranian and the Poodle coat.

  • One of the advantages of a Pomeranian-Poodle mix is that they generally shed very little. This can be a great advantage for those who are allergic to dog hair or who don't want to deal with a lot of shedding. Another advantage of a Pomeranian-Poodle mix is that they are usually very intelligent dogs. This makes them easier to train than some other dog breeds.

  • One challenge that can come with owning a Pomeranian-Poodle mix is that they require more grooming than some other dog breeds. This is because their coat is a mix of Pomeranian and Poodle coats.

  • A Pomeranian-Poodle mix usually needs moderate exercise. This means that you should take them for a walk or run every day. You can also enjoy playing fetch or other games that require them to run and chase.
