16 very ugly dogs - this is our list

The "ugliest" dogs in the world - to be seen with a twinkle in the eye. Because there are so many lovable characters - that the appearance is far from being an obstacle.

Beauty is a concept that is as old as humanity itself and is constantly evolving and changing. What is beautiful to one person may be completely different to another. This diversity of tastes and preferences extends not only to art, fashion and architecture, but also to our faithful companions, dogs. In the world of dog breeds, there is a remarkable variety of shapes, sizes and characteristics, each with its own charm and character.

However, some dog breeds have characteristics that some might consider unconventional or even "ugly". In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at some of these breeds. We'll look at their unique characteristics, their history, and what makes them so special despite - or perhaps because of - their unusual appearance.

We explore 16 ugly dog breeds that are often considered "not beautiful," but at the same time have a passionate following that appreciates and loves their uniqueness. From the hairless elegance of the Peruvian Naked Dog to the distinctive shape of the Boston Terrier, these breeds challenge our traditional notions of beauty and invite us to look beyond the exterior.

1. pug

Even though I personally don't find the pug dog ugly at all, for many people it is simply one of the ugliest dogs in the world. Not only the backbred snout are a reason for this, but also his physique and the many wrinkles. Furthermore, he is not only visually in criticism but the pug is also considered torture breeding.

The pug is a dog breed that was often affected by such breeding practices in the past. Purposefully bred to have a flat face (brachycephaly), many Pugs have difficulty breathing, as their short nasal passages and flat faces can obstruct airflow. In addition, they can suffer from other health problems, such as eye problems, due to their protruding eyes.

In many countries, torture breeding is prohibited by law, and efforts are underway to improve the health and well-being of breeds like the Pug by breeding away from extreme physical traits.

2. the Chinese crested dog

This is an unusual and unique breed of dogs. This breed is best known for its lack of fur and its particular skin texture, which is often covered with wrinkles. There are two varieties of the Chinese Crested Dog: the Hairless type, which has little to no fur, and the Powderpuff type, which is covered with a soft, silky coat. The hairless type often has a "mane" of hair on the head and possibly on the paws and tail. The breed is often described as intelligent, loving and energetic. Chinese Crested Dogs are usually good family dogs and get along well with children and other pets.

However, the Chinese Crested Dog is often referred to as "ugly" due to its unusual appearance. The lack of hair and wrinkled skin are unusual to many people, and the breed has even been highlighted in some "ugliest dog" contests.

3. chongqing dog

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is a rare and original dog breed that originated in the Chongqing region of China. It is known for its unusual appearance, which is characterized by short, dense fur, a broad chest and a prominent head shape. His skin is often wrinkled, especially in the facial area, which contributes to his unique appearance. There is more to the Chinese Chongqing Dog than just his appearance. He is often described as loyal, courageous and intelligent. These dogs have a close bond with their families and can be excellent watchdogs. They tend to be suspicious of strangers, which makes them effective protectors of their homes.

4. bull terrier

The Bull Terrier is a dog breed that often causes polarizing opinions regarding its appearance. With its egg-shaped head, small, deep-set eyes, and muscular body, the bull terrier has a distinctive appearance that some people might call "ugly." However, beauty is subjective, and many people find the Bull Terrier's unusual appearance charming and attractive. Away from its appearance, the Bull Terrier is known as a lively, friendly and loyal dog that can develop a strong bond with its family. Opinions about the Bull Terrier's appearance are therefore largely a matter of personal taste. While some people may find its appearance less appealing, many others appreciate the breed precisely for its unique appearance and positive character traits.

5. brussels griffon

The Brussels Griffon is a small breed of dog that originated in Belgium and is known for its distinctive appearance. With their large, round eyes, flat face and shaggy coat, they have an unusual appearance that some people might consider "ugly". Away from their outward appearance, the Brussels Griffon is known for their lively, curious and affectionate personality. These dogs are often very affectionate and enjoy the company of their humans.

6. xoloitzcuintli

The Mexican Naked Dog, also known as Xoloitzcuintli or simply Xolo, is one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds in the world. The breed originated in Mexico and has a history that goes back several thousand years.

The most noticeable aspect of the Xoloitzcuintli is its lack of fur, although there is a hairless variety. The hairless variety displays a smooth, robust skin that can appear in various shades from black to gray to a bronze hue. The skin feels warm to the touch as there is no hair to insulate body heat. Some people find the unusual appearance of the hairless Xolo unattractive, with the lack of fur being perceived as foreignness. Others view the dog's unique appearance as exotic and beautiful.

7. bedlington terrier

The Bedlington Terrier is a dog breed known for its unusual appearance, often compared to that of a lamb. It has a characteristic silky, curly coat texture that is styled into a pot-shaped cut, and a distinctive head shape that is pointed. His ears are set low and hang close to his head, while his eyes are small and almond-shaped.

The Bedlington Terrier's appearance can be controversial, and some people find its appearance more odd than attractive. The resemblance to a lamb, combined with a slender and elegant body shape, certainly makes it one of the most unusual dog breeds. Despite its gentle appearance, the Bedlington Terrier is an energetic and courageous dog. He was originally bred in England as a working dog, used to hunt pests such as rats and badgers. He is known for his speed and sharp mind.

8. komondor

The Komondor is a Hungarian dog breed known for its striking, rope-length coat that makes it distinctive. This unique coat is made up of thick, interlocking curls that can reach down to the ground, almost completely covering the dog.

The Komondor's coat serves a practical purpose. Not only does it serve as insulation against extreme weather conditions, but it also provides protection against predators should the dog become involved in a fight. Originally, the Komondor was used as a shepherd dog, and its fur helped it blend in with the sheep it protected. Some people find the Komondor's unusual appearance unattractive or unsightly, while others appreciate its uniqueness and functionality. The long, rope-like curls can be perceived as messy or disproportionate, especially if the coat is not well groomed. Grooming the Komondor can be a challenge. Its coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting, and it can be difficult to keep clean, especially in muddy areas. Away from his appearance, the Komondor is a brave, independent dog that is often described as serious and dignified. He can be very protective and tends to develop a close bond with his family. Because the Komondor was originally bred as a guard dog, he can be wary of strangers and needs careful socialization and training.

9. Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher, often translated as "little monkey dog", is a small but robust dog breed originally developed in Germany. Its name is derived from its distinctive appearance, reminiscent of a small monkey. With a shoulder height of about 25 to 30 cm and a weight of about 3 to 4 kg, the Affenpinscher is a small dog with a big personality. Its rough, wiry coat, round, dark eyes and short, flat nose bridge give it an almost human-like face.

10. peruvian naked dog

The Peruvian Naked Dog is known for its lack of hair, which shows its smooth skin. Color variations range from pink to black. The breed can be sensitive to sunburn and cold, and its unique appearance often polarizes opinions.

11. boston terrier

The Boston Terrier is a small, compact dog with a pronounced, flat nose and large, round eyes. His glossy coat is mostly black and white. Some people might find its particular facial structure unattractive, but many appreciate its lively and friendly nature.

12. chihuahua

The Chihuahua is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, known for its large eyes and big ears in proportion to its body. Some people find these proportions disproportionate, but Chihuahuas are often loved for their loyalty and courageous character.

13. french bulldog

The French Bulldog has a strong and muscular appearance with a broad, flat nose and bat-like ears. Some might find their brachycephalic face unattractive, while others appreciate their affectionate and playful nature. Again, as with the Pug described at the beginning, torture breeding applies.

14. neapolitan mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff is known for its massive size and the numerous folds of skin that cover its face and body. This wrinkled appearance could be off-putting to some, but many people admire their gentle and calm nature.

15. dandie dinmont terrier

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier has an elongated body and a distinctive "pot" cut on the head that accentuates his large, expressive eyes. Its unusual proportions and special hair styling might be considered odd by some.

16. borzoi

The Borzoi, a Russian Greyhound, is elegant and graceful with a long, narrow head and a silky, wavy coat. Its extremely slender figure and long legs might be considered disproportionate by some, while others admire its elegance and speed.

The ranking of the "ugliest" dogs in this blog post has certainly attracted attention and highlighted a wide range of dog breeds, each with unique and distinctive characteristics. However, it is important to emphasize that beauty is a highly subjective and culturally determined concept. What may seem unattractive to one person may be charming and appealing to another.

Including these breeds in such a ranking can be an opportunity to explore their characteristics, history, and individual characters. It can also be an impetus for discussion about how we perceive and value beauty, especially in the context of pets, which are often considered family members.

Despite the controversial nature of the topic, this blog post can help raise awareness about lesser-known or misunderstood breeds. It may also inspire pet lovers to look beyond appearances and appreciate the unique personalities and abilities that each dog brings to the table, regardless of their appearance.

Ultimately, this ranking reminds us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that the bond and understanding we share with our four-legged friends goes far beyond what we see at first glance. It is the love, loyalty and joy they bring to our lives that make them truly beautiful.
