A West Highland White Terrier and Coton de Tuléar mix

The Weston is a hybrid breed that is still not very common and is the result of crossing a West Highland White Terrier (also known as a Westie) with a Coton de Tuléar. The aim of this breeding was to combine the typical characteristics of both breeds - the cheerful energy of the Westie and the gentle, affectionate nature of the Coton - in a compact, family-friendly companion dog.

The mix probably came about over the last two decades as interest in so-called "designer dogs" increased. The Weston is said to have an easy-care, allergy-friendly coat, a balanced character and a moderate size - ideal for families or individuals looking for an active but not over-excited dog.

Criticism of the Weston

As with many hybrid dogs, the Weston has been criticized for its breeding practices. As the Weston is not recognized as an official breed, there are no binding standards for health, temperament and appearance. This means that each litter can turn out differently, both in terms of appearance and character.

Another point of criticism concerns the responsibility of the breeder. Without targeted selection and medical examination of the parent animals, hereditary diseases of both breeds can be passed on uncontrollably. The idea that mixed breeds are fundamentally healthier is only tenable if breeding is carried out expertly and responsibly.

In addition, animal welfare organizations are critical of the increasing proliferation of designer dogs - not only because of possible health problems, but also because they are often marketed as fashion dogs without emphasizing the long-term responsibility that a dog's life entails.

Suitability of the Weston

Despite justified criticism, the Weston can be an excellent companion dog if bred responsibly. It is particularly suitable for active families, couples or single people who want an adaptable, friendly and socially acceptable dog.

The Weston's Coton heritage often gives it an affectionate, cuddly side, while the Westie provides liveliness, playfulness and self-confidence. The Weston is usually intelligent, eager to learn and can be trained well - provided you are consistent, patient and offer sufficient mental and physical exercise.

They do well both in an apartment and in a house with a garden, as long as they have enough to do and are close to their humans. The Weston is also suitable for beginners - depending on their individual temperament - if they are willing to learn about dog behavior and care.

Possible character traits of the Weston

The Weston usually combines the cheerful, energetic nature of the West Highland White Terrier with the gentle, affectionate nature of the Coton de Tuléar. The result is often a lively, intelligent and people-oriented small dog that can be both active and cuddly.

Westons are often curious, playful and eager to learn. They love to be the center of attention and enjoy being close to their humans. At the same time, they often have a good dose of independence and self-confidence - a legacy of the Westie.

Typical of the Weston is its even temperament: it can adapt well to the everyday life of its caregivers, likes to be out and about, but is also happy to just be there. He usually gets on well with other dogs as long as he has been socialized at an early age.

His intelligence makes him a grateful training partner, but he needs clear boundaries and loving consistency, as he can also tend to be stubborn. Boredom should be avoided as it can lead to undesirable behavior.

Possible diseases of the Weston

Even though mixed breeds such as the Weston are often considered more robust, they can inherit genetic diseases from both parents. Responsible breeding is therefore crucial to minimize health risks.

Possible diseases in the Weston can be:

  • Allergies and skin problems, especially if sensitive skin is inherited from the Westie.

  • Patellar luxation (an unstable kneecap), which is more common in small dog breeds.

  • Dental problems, especially with crowded teeth and small jaws.

  • Eye disorders, including dry eyes, eyelid inflammation or lacrimation.

  • Heart problems, as occasionally occur in the Coton de Tuléar.

  • Hearing problems, especially in breeding lines with white parents.

Regular veterinary check-ups, dental care, a balanced diet and appropriate exercise go a long way towards keeping the Weston healthy.

The appearance of the Weston can vary, but is usually in the range of a small to medium-sized dog with a weight of around 5 to 9 kilograms and a shoulder height of 25 to 30 centimetres.

The build is usually compact, strong and well-proportioned, with rather short legs and an upright, alert gait. The head shape can take on both the rounder silhouette of the Coton and the typical expression of the Westie. The ears are usually triangular and drooping or semi-erect.

The coat is particularly striking: it is usually soft, dense and of medium length, often with a slightly wavy or fluffy texture - a mixture of the typical cotton coat of the Coton and the rougher coat of the Westie. Many Westons are considered low-maintenance and hardly shed at all, but require regular brushing to avoid matting.

The coat color is often white, but can also be cream-colored or interspersed with beige, gray or sand-colored markings - depending on the genetic mix. Dark eyes and a black nose also give the Weston a friendly, open appearance.

Overall, the Weston comes across as a lively, friendly small dog with charm and personality - a charismatic companion for many situations in life.
