Facts & Origin
The Shichon - a Bichon Frisé and Shih Tzu mix
The Shichon - also known by names such as Zuchon or Teddy Bear Dog - is a deliberate cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frisé. Breeding probably began in the USA in the early 2000s, when interest in so-called designer dogs was on the rise.
The aim of this mix was to combine the affectionate, loving nature of the Shih Tzu with the playful, cheerful character of the Bichon Frisé - in a small, easy-care and ideally allergy-friendly dog. The name "Teddy Bear Dog" comes from their often fluffy appearance, which is reminiscent of a cuddly toy.
Criticism of the Shichon
As with many hybrid breeds, there is also criticism of the Shichon, particularly with regard to breeding standards and health. The Shichon is not an officially recognized breed, so there are no uniform standards for appearance, behaviour or health care.
A common misconception is that mixed breeds are automatically healthier. In reality, this depends heavily on the quality of the breeding. If the parent animals are not examined for health problems, inherited problems from both breeds can multiply - such as eye diseases, breathing problems or allergies.
Commercial marketing as a "teddy dog" is also viewed critically, which is primarily aimed at the cute appearance without sufficient reference to the needs and care requirements. The plush coat in particular requires regular grooming, which many owners underestimate.
Suitability of the Shichon
If raised responsibly, the Shichon is a friendly, loving and affectionate family dog that is characterized by its gentle nature and adaptability.
It is particularly suitable for families with children, senior citizens or first-time dog owners, as it is usually easy to train, forms a close bond with its people and feels at home in a variety of living situations - whether in an apartment or a house with a garden.
Shichons are playful, intelligent and attentive, but do not need extreme exercise. They like going for walks together, playing educational games and being close to people. Being alone is usually difficult for them, so a constant caregiver is important.
With their friendly, social nature, they usually get on well with other dogs and cats. Nevertheless, like every dog, they need clear rules and loving consistency in their training.

Attitude, character and temperament of the breed
Possible character traits of the Shichon
The Shichon is considered friendly, even-tempered and very people-oriented. It often combines the affectionate gentleness of the Shih Tzu with the playful cheerfulness of the Bichon Frisé - which makes it an ideal family and companion dog.
Typically attentive, cuddly and social, the Shichon loves close contact with its caregivers and feels most comfortable when it can "be there". He is usually patient and friendly with children and also gets along well with other dogs or pets.
The Shichon is also intelligent and willing to learn, which makes it easier to train - although it can sometimes be a little sensitive or independent. Consistency, patience and positive reinforcement are therefore important.
Due to its rather even temperament, the Shichon is suitable for both quiet households and active families. Although it needs daily exercise and mental activity, it is not an overly demanding dog and can adapt well to different lifestyles.
Usage
Possible diseases of the Shichon
As with all hybrid breeds, health problems can also occur in the Shichon, which are inherited from the parents. A responsible breeder should therefore always be able to prove the health of both parents.
Possible diseases in the Shichon:
Eye diseases such as cataracts, tear duct constriction or dry eyes
Dental problems, such as narrow jaws and misaligned teeth
Allergies and skin problems, especially with sensitive skin
Patellar luxation - instability of the kneecap, which is common in small dogs
Ear infections, favored by densely hairy, drooping ears
Breathing problems, especially if the Shih Tzu part is very pronounced (e.g. short muzzle)
Regular veterinary checks, care of teeth, ears and coat, as well as a balanced diet help to prevent many of these problems.
This is what a Shichon can look like
The appearance of the Shichon is not uniform, as it is a mixed breed. Many Shichons resemble small teddy bears, which is why they are often referred to as "Teddy Bear Dogs".
They are usually small to medium-sized, with a shoulder height of around 23 to 30 centimetres and a weight of between 4 and 8 kilograms. The build is compact, with a round head, a gentle facial expression and large, dark beady eyes. The ears hang down softly at the sides and are often well furred.
The coat is a special feature: it is usually soft, dense, medium to long and can be slightly wavy or curly. Many Shichons shed very little and are therefore considered relatively allergy-friendly. However, grooming is time-consuming: Regular brushing and occasional trimming are necessary to prevent matting.
Almost anything is possible in terms of color: white, cream, apricot, grey, black, brown - often in combinations or with markings.
Overall, the Shichon is an extremely charming, gentle and loving small dog that wins many hearts with its plush appearance and friendly nature.
