What diseases can occur Pootalians?

Most of us think that the cross between Italian Greyhounds and Miniature Poodles is a very healthy dog breed. While there are fewer genetic diseases in some crossbreds than in purebreds this is not a reason to neglect vet visits.

Common diseases Pootalians mixed breeds have are liver disease, atopy; also known as allergic reactions to certain allergens in the environment such as pollen, dust or mold, and gastrointestinal disease. Many of these diseases occur because of poor nutrition and irregular exercise. Therefore, it is important to provide your Italian Greyhound-Poodle mix with the right food, enough exercise and lots of love and attention.

There may also be certain eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachments. Therefore, it is important that your dog has regular visits to the veterinarian for eye exams and tests.

Genetic disorders are also common in these mixed breeds. The most common is luxating patella, which is caused by an ineffective kneecap. Other common problems include luxated shoulders, entropion (inner eyelids that roll inward), and dysplasia of the hip joint, which causes severe joint problems.

Since most of these conditions can be inherited, it is important to check if the parents have any of these conditions before purchasing a mixed breed. Genetic testing may also need to be done to determine if the animal is at risk for genetic diseases.

While many of the diseases are serious, there are many things you can do to ensure your pet's health. Don't forget that your dog should have a thorough examination at the veterinarian's office at least once a year. It is also recommended that dogs have regular vaccinations; especially those that go outdoors often. Finally, make an effort to provide your dog with enough exercise and a diet that is adapted to its specific needs.
