Facts & Origin
Basset Hound and Shar-Pei in one
The Ba-Shar is a designer hybrid breed created by crossing a Basset Hound with a Shar-Pei. The aim of this mix was to combine the gentle, friendly nature of the Basset Hound with the independent, calm nature of the Shar-Pei.
The deliberate breeding of these hybrid dogs probably began in the last few decades in the USA, when interest in unique, characterful mixed breeds steadily increased. The Ba-Shar was bred primarily as a family-friendly, cozy companion dog that builds a strong bond with its humans, but is independent and somewhat more frugal in temperament than other, very active hybrid breeds.
Criticism of the Ba-Shar
As with many designer dogs, the Ba-Shar is also criticized for not having uniform standards for appearance, health or behaviour. This means that the offspring can vary greatly - depending on which characteristics of the Basset Hound or Shar-Pei are more prominent.
Another point of criticism concerns the health risks. Both parents have certain hereditary problems:
The Basset Hound is prone to joint problems and obesity.
The Shar-Pei is prone to skin problems (e.g. wrinkle inflammation) and autoimmune diseases.
If attention is not paid to healthy, tested parents when breeding, these problems can also occur in the Ba-Shar.
Suitability of the Ba-Shar
Despite possible challenges, the Ba-Shar is a loyal, relaxed and loving family dog if raised with love and kept in a species-appropriate manner. It is well suited to people who are looking for a cozy companion with a strong character and who are aware of the characteristics of its original breeds.
Typical characteristics of the Ba-Shar:
Affectionate and family-oriented, often very loyal
Calm, not overly active
Independent, sometimes a little stubborn
Alert, but rarely overly barking
The Ba-Shar is suitable for:
Quiet families or couples who are looking for a more relaxed dog
People who do not expect an extremely athletic breed
Owners with patience and understanding for independent dogs
It needs moderate exercise, regular coat and skin care (depending on the severity of the wrinkles) and consistent but gentle training.

Possible character traits of the Ba-Shar
The Ba-Shar is usually a calm, relaxed and loyal dog that is closely bonded to its family. It often combines the friendly, relaxed nature of the Basset Hound with the independent, watchful nature of the Shar-Pei.
Typical character traits of the Ba-Shar are
Loyalty to its caregivers
Calm temperament with a certain composure
Independence, occasionally combined with stubbornness
Vigilance without excessive barking
Friendliness, usually also towards children and known visitors
A Ba-Shar loves to be part of family life, but is often not "everybody's darling" - he is sometimes reserved towards strangers. His independence also means that he doesn't always want to "please" straight away and patience and consistency are required when training him.
Usage
Possible diseases of the Ba-Shar
As with all hybrid breeds, health problems can also occur in the Ba-Shar, which can be inherited from both parents.
Possible health risks in the Ba-Shar:
Skin problems and wrinkle inflammation (Shar-Pei portion)
Ear infections, especially with drooping, poorly ventilated ears (Basset part)
Joint problems, such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia
Overweight, with too little exercise and poor diet
Eye problems, e.g. entropion (rolling of the eyelids)
Autoimmune diseases (typical for Shar-Pei)
Regular veterinary check-ups, good skin care, weight control and balanced exercise are important to maintain the Ba-Shar's long-term health.
This is what a Ba-Shar can look like
The appearance of the Ba-Shar varies depending on its genetic make-up, but is usually somewhere between a Basset Hound and a Shar-Pei. Typically, it is a medium-sized, strong dog weighing between 18 and 30 kilograms and with a shoulder height of around 30 to 45 cm.
Characteristic features:
Short to medium-length legs (like the Basset Hound)
Massive, robust build
Broad head with expressive eyes
Wrinkles, especially on the face and neck or shoulders (depending on the Shar-Pei influence)
Drooping or semi-erect ears
Short, dense coat, often easy to groom
The coat colors are varied: typically beige, brown, black, red, white or a combination of these colors, sometimes with markings.
Overall, the Ba-Shar looks like a cozy, powerful mix with a strong character that immediately stands out due to its unique appearance.
Known Diseases
Overweight
Often, unfortunately, the dogs very much under excess weight. But the dogs themselves are never to blame!
Disc problems
Herniated disc in dogs (discopathy). Herniated discs or dachshund paralysis cause dogs severe pain.
Skin inflammations
Can be hereditary in certain breeds.
Amyloidosis
Amyloidosis refers to a group of diseases that share a common feature: the pathological abnormal deposition of a fibrous protein called amyloid in various tissues of the body. Several organs are often involved.
