Hybrid Breed

Maltese + Poodle

Dogs/Active

Origin and history of the Maltipoo

Name and origin are usually close together: the breeding of this quadruped began in the USA in the 80s. At that time, a poodle and a Maltese were crossed with the aim of integrating docility and robustness of a poodle with the nature of a Maltese.

It is considered as a so-called designer dog, whose popularity is constantly increasing even in Germany. However, the FCI does not recognize this breed, so there is no breed standard and the characteristics of your four-legged friend can vary greatly.

Special characteristics

Both Poodles and Maltese belong to the non-hairy types of dogs. The Maltipoo, which is the result of the mating of both breeds, has the same characteristics. No seasonal coat change exists, so it is an ideal allergy dog. But beware. Even hypoallergenic dogs shed dander and saliva, which can cause certain reactions for allergy sufferers. Therefore, it is important that those affected get tested even before buying a Maltipoo puppy.

Characteristics of the Maltipoo

The Maltipoo is an intelligent four-legged dog that is willing to learn and that always tries to win the favor of its owner. These characteristics prove to be particularly advantageous in education and during training: joyfully excited, the little darling would like to present you every learned dog command several times in a row.

The Maltipoo in the family

The Maltipoo is an excellent family dog. However, within his "pack" he chooses a caregiver who will act as pack leader for him. With children, he has a tendency to instinctively protect them and behaves gently and considerately toward them.

The quadruped possesses a healthy distrust and observes strangers from a safe distance, often barking when approached.

Attitude and exercise

When romping around, fetching sticks or during various search and catch games, the Maltipoo can really let off steam. Because of its size, children should be older than five years and have an understanding for the dog. In addition, care should be taken that he gets enough rest.

Typical diseases of the Maltipoo breed

Because of their ancestry and hybrid strength, Maltipoos are considered a relatively hardy breed.

However, as with all dog breeds, problems with the kneecap (patellar luxation) can occur. In this case, the patella shifts and the extension mechanism of the joint is impeded, resulting in severe pain. The visit of a veterinarian is then absolutely nowendig.

Regular care

Another risk is the coat. Since the dog breed is not subject to a coat change, the care must not be neglected. A minimal shortening of the hair around the eyes prevents eye inflammations. In addition, dirty and matted fur can quickly lead to further skin irritation, so it is important to maintain it daily.

If kept in a species-appropriate manner, a Maltipoo may well live to be twelve to fifteen years old.

Tips for buying a puppy!

  • If you are looking to buy a Maltipoo, look directly at the breeder.
  • Ask other owners where they bought their Maltipoo puppy.
  • If you are still unsure, ask a veterinarian.
  • Ask for the vaccination certificate of the four-legged friend. This should already contain a proof of basic immunization by a specialist.

The price of a Malitpoo puppy is not exactly low due to the mixture with the Poodle - and thus the reputation of a "hypoallergenic dog". A Maltipoo can cost up to 1500-2000 euros. Cheaper specimens, however, can be found for as little as 700 euros. Pay attention to the breeding conditions and the breeder.

Maltipoo breed description

The Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle, and is notable for its charming appearance and cute build. As a hybrid dog, the Maltipoo's appearance can vary depending on genetic predisposition. But in any case, this little four-legged friend is a real eye-catcher.

Coat texture and colors

The coat of the Maltipoo is usually soft and curly and resembles that of a poodle, although it can also be less curly and more wavy. A distinctive feature is that the Maltipoo hardly sheds at all, making it a good choice for those with allergies. Coat colors vary from white, cream, apricot to silver and chocolate. They can be both solid and multi-colored.

Size and weight

The Maltipoo is a small dog whose size and weight can vary depending on the particular parent. On average, Maltipoos reach a height of 20 to 30 cm at the withers and weigh between 3 and 5 kg. They are light-footed and elegant, with a well-proportioned stature.

Face and expression

The Maltipoo's face is one of its most striking features. The round, dark eyes give it an affectionate and curious expression. The ears are of medium length and hang slightly to the side of the head. The muzzle is usually slightly shorter than that of the Maltese and shows the influence of the Poodle.

Need for care

Although the Maltipoo may appear to be low maintenance, its coat is still in need of regular grooming. It should be brushed and trimmed as needed to prevent matting. The ears should be checked and cleaned as needed to prevent infection.

In summary, the Maltipoo is a small, attractive dog with a wide range of coat varieties and colors. Its cute build and loving expression make it a desirable companion and family dog.

  • Patellar problems

Problems with the Patellar can be a displacement or weak kneecap, which is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs, also because of overweight.

  • Eye infections

Chronic eye infections can be very painful in dogs and can be treated with medication. In rare cases, the cornea must be treated.

  • Joint damage

In some breeds, joint damage can occur later in life, affecting the musculoskeletal system.

  • Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation is the term used to describe a displacement of the kneecap, which is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs.

  • This is mainly due to their upbringing. In principle, they are alert and therefore also barking - however, with training, this can also be trained away.

  • A Maltipoo is a small to medium sized dog breed and has curls.

  • A Maltipoo puppy costs about 2000-3000 euros. It is a specially bred hybrid breed of Maltese and Poodle.

  • An average of 1-2 hours a day for walks and running outdoors is enough for the small dog breed. At home, however, you should do mental work to keep the dog mentally busy.
